You aren’t forced to stick with the distro defaults
You can add applications, drivers, etc. And if you want you could even change your desktop environment, not just the background. That’s one of the great things about Linux distros. I’ve read complaints about KDE 4.0 and I understand the pain of people who got it by default. KDE 4 is quite different from the previous one as it has new ways to interact with users. The use of plasmoids, for example. It will make users have a totally different user interaction.
However, having a different user interface from what users are used to could be a disadvantage. Especially for new users who have used something else which is more like another OS. I suppose that is what each OS switch and desktop environment switch will entail. In any case, one could switch back to something more familiar. It’s the freedom we have as users. And while we have that, we could make a choice anytime.
If you’ve got complaints, you could look for another way to interact with your OS. It would take some searching and reading but if it helps, that should be fine. There’s probably no one true user interface as preferences change from one person to another. I am just glad about choices that we are given. Thanks to the developers who work on them. And on our end, we could send them feedback and suggestions. If ever you’re someone who’s capable of writing code, you could even help them solve it. The important thing is that we are open-minded about such things.
