Yay! Linux on the desktop doubles
Though it may seem a small number, the number of Linux users has increased. A survey says that Linux has a .81% market share these days compared to its former .37% market share.
According to statistics provided by Market Share by Net Applications, starting in December 2006 and through September 2007, Linux doubled its market share. This detail would sound nothing short of promising, except for the fact that the doubling in market share is equivalent to a jump from 0.37% to 0.81%. In the past month, the open source operating system only increased its footprint on the market by 0.4%, from 0.77% to 0.81%.
I have to agree with one of the comments I read that maybe some of the users counted here are Linux users who have purchased with Vista pre-installed. Which is not unlikely. I am using a Lenovo C3000 N100 which has Windows XP pre-installed. Though I must admit that I am using Windows while at the client’s office, my laptop dual boots to Ubuntu Feisty and I have been considering wiping out the entire disk and put Windows on a vm instead of going dual boot.
Anyhow, it seems that Linux users are growing in numbers. I hope it’s because people are becoming more aware that they don’t have to be stuck with Vista and that Linux is pretty good too. Even if it does have driver-related issues. But even Windows has that! ;)
