Why should your office use Linux?
For some people they don’t really think about what OS is installed in their computers because they’re sure that when they work in a company and they’re given a machine, it will work properly.
However, if you’re one of the decision makers of the company, you will think about this problem carefully. Especially if you’re trying to cut down on costs. Sometimes the cost of licenses could drive you nuts when you know that you need to allocate for salaries of new employees or renovating your officespace, etc.
There are actually many reasons why you should use Linux in your office and I could list some of them.
- Given that your employees will have some training when it comes to using software installed on their computers, they could be as productive as if they’re using other operating systems and applications.
- Free software gives them a variety of choices. They could look for various alternatives for specific computing needs.
- Linux gives them a different way of experiencing computing. It will give them exposure to a different set of tools and thus they shall be able try different things.
- Linux won’t charge you an arm and a leg. Well, it does have its price but in terms of your office managing costs, you’d find it better.
- Most Linux distros have the basic things you need to work in an office. You’ve got spreadsheet apps, text editors, document writers, web browsers and even media players if you’re so inclined in your workplace.
I’ve seen people who had no idea about Linux and yet are now working using Linux machines. They use OpenOffice.org to write and edit documentation, they communicate via Pidgin, edit images using GIMP, and listen to music using VLC. Some even go beyond those apps which are installed by default and they even install other desktop environments so that they could personalize their laptops better. Some people say that productivity will be sacrificed but it really depends on how you could assess the roles of each person in the office. With the roles are tasks and tasks need particular tools. Hence the importance of checking out the software that the people really need.
People could go into long arguments about this topic but at the end of the day you have to choose one. What could help you decide is if you let others try out Linux and see for themselves in what ways they could benefit from the experience.
