Why settle for bundled Windows software?

by Clair on September 27th, 2007

All the laptops have been issued in the office have Windows bundled with them. Even if we’d end up installing Linux on them, even if Windows would end up unused by the person who’s getting the laptop, the company still pays for Windows just because. Even though there are now companies who are shipping Linux with the laptops, like Dell, it can’t be helped that every once in a while we’d encounter hardware with specs that we like and yet it would have Windows pre-installed.

There’s something nifty and convenient about having a pre-installed OS on our computers. It makes them useful immediately. But the downside of having Windows as the default bundled OS is that there is an immediate dependence on it, for those who don’t even know that they have other options.

There is an article by the Globalisation Institute that wants to challenge the way we see bundled software. In an article called Unbundling Microsoft Windows, the Globalisation Institute calls for the unbundling of the operating system altogether. Why? For practical reasons on the side of those selling computers in stores. If the computers come with the OS they might end up getting stalled because of the need to re-install a different OS just because what they have in stock is a computer with a different one. It would also lessen troubles for refunds in the case of those who choose to not have the pre-installed OS.

I think that if this will happen, people need to get educated first. That they could use open source software which would let them do the things that they have to. It might not be the same way that they are used to, but if they truly are conscious of their choices, they could probably save not only money but they could also learn other things through the adoption of open source software.
