Why get a live cd?

by Clair on September 5th, 2007

There are people who are addicted to Linux live cd testing. Everytime there’s a new release, they would download it and run it on their computers. For newbies, the live cd is a powerful tool:

  • It would show you if your hardware works with that particular set of hardware.
  • It would show you the features of the distro without installing it yet.
  • It would educate you on the differences each distro has.

The three reasons I stated above are essential to anyone who would be using a completely different operating system. There are newbies who got turned off with Linux because their experience in using it was forced and they didn’t even get to evaluate what kind of Linux suits them the most. Unless of course they were forced to use it in school or in their office, of course. They might have had no or limited trial time. In any case, a live cd is useful because it would give a you more time to figure out if you like it or not, if it’s useful or not. After all, each distribution of Linux has a different set of default tools available. That’s why trying out a live cd is actually fun! You see the different tools and how they complement each other. Exploration is fun when you’ve got a good set of tools to fiddle around with.
