What’s a good phone to use with Linux?
Most of the phones out there have software made for Windows. For example, my erstwhile LG KU 250. It has a PC Suite software but the thing is that it’s just for Windows. *sigh* Well, I’ve lost it already so I won’t be using it anytime soon anymore. It would be nice to use a phone that would somehow ’sync’ with Ubuntu and be relatively cheap. Oh, and available in the Philippines too! I think I might be asking for too much but I’ve recently lost my phone.
Some things which would be awesome to have are:
- Sync with Linux
- Bluetooth
- 3G
- camera - 1.3 Megapixels would be ok, autofocus not necessary for me
- music playing capability
- Java
At the very least it would allow me to:
- save my contacts as vcards
- copy files via USB
- go online via GPRS
I swear, though. Now that I’ve experienced video calls and being able to import and export data from phone to computer via Bluetooth, I’d really love those features.
What kind of phone are you using? How are you making backups of your data on your Linux machine?

My phone is an LG VX8300. It doesn’t have Java, but it has bluetooth capability, a camera, and an MP3 player. I can transfer images, ringtones, sounds, etc. and backup contacts by way of bitpim, and it can take a MiniSD card up to two gigs.

@mdebusk: How do you find the user interface of the phone? That’s one thing I forgot to write about my former LG phone. The user interface is not quite intuitive and the keypad is noisy.

@mdebusk - I actually opted for the Sony Ericsson K610i even though it has a proprietary card. I could send contacts’ vcards via Bluetooth so that is something that could work for me at the moment.
