What to Look Forward to in Gutsy Gibbon
Just a little over a week and we have neat features to look forward to in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon:
- Starting today, desktop search via Tracker and Deskbar
- Improved usability for configuring the graphic environment, with features such as Bulletproof-X and Graphical X configuration
- Spectacular desktop visual effects by default, brought to you by Compiz-Fusion
- Improvements in Firefox plugins, including Gnash installed by default
- Fast User Switching for those with shared machines
- Printer auto-detection
- Better handling of non-free drivers (including firmware installation)
- Improved security with AppArmor
- Easier access to your files on Windows with NTFS writing
Looks like there’d be an easier time for newbies with this release. Bulletproof-X is sure a help so that nobody will freak out that you have to do reconfigure of X.org on the command line. I recall encountering weird X.org problems like my the resolution on my screen is suddenly 800×600 or X failed to start and I’d end up having to reconfigure. It sure was weird but it happened often enough at the time.
Less hassles installing Flash, too. Thanks to Gnash! They decided to install it by default with Firefox. Coolness. I am also looking forward to seeing how they will handle non-free drivers and NTFS writing support.
