New Linux User

What do you want to happen with Linux in the coming years?

by Clair on July 27th, 2008

Linux is becoming more commonly used thanks to Linux users who advocate it, manufacturers who take the plunge and distribute their machines with Linux, etc. There might be people who are content with what Linux is at the moment but I suppose there’d still be some features which have yet to be expected.

In terms of distros, I hope to see distros which would even better when it comes to usability and aesthetics. They look pretty good now, especially with the desktop environments that they ship with them. But I think that there’s still room for improvement. I guess that is something more for desktop environment teams to worry about, mainly.

Another thing that I wish to see is more and more hardware manufacturers would work with Linux developers in order to make user experience better. Sometimes it’s the lack of device drivers that push users away from adopting Linux. They should see what users need and they’d still be able to sell their hardware anyway. Even if they give out the drivers, that is. Because more people will find it easier to use, no matter what OS they have. In any case we are also seeing some developments in that aspect too because of developers who are reverse engineering the drivers. It’s not easy but they are up to the task and I am thankful for their work.

How about you? What do you wish to see in the coming years? Or are you content with the current state of Linux?
