Welcome Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon!

by Clair on October 18th, 2007

I’ve actually been using the beta version and have yet to upgrade. In any case, welcome Gutsy! I expect that the desktops in the office will be upgraded within the next two weeks. At least half of the desktop machines in the office are running Ubuntu and our interns don’t seem to have much problems using Ubuntu and other apps on it. And considering how nice Gutsy Gibbon looks like and feels like when using it, I think they’ll be quite happy with the upgrade. ;) Oh and yeah, Ubuntu is going 3D :P Compiz funkiness wins the hearts of those who love eyecandy.

So the Compiz looks pretty… and there are three settings to choose from: none, standard and extra. I currently set it to none because I am not such a huge fan of it on my own system. Wobbly windows and bouncing windows are amusing. In any case, I find it really pretty and nifty but it’s not a big thing for me. I actually still like OpenBox up to now.

Anyway, there are lovely wallpapers on the Artwork wiki page. Wouldn’t customizing your Gutsy Gibbon install be a nice way to welcome it? :D Make it your theme, make it into something you’d love to use everyday. I personally love the Orange pack, the artwork submitted by troy_s, the elephant skin, the artwork of twright and the Ubuntu Sparks theme. (Thanks to Jim for the link to the artwork wiki page!)

While we’re at it, let’s welcome Kubuntu 7.10 as well! And nixternal’s blog has an interesting post on what they thought of title names for Kubuntu. Check it out and see how amusing it is.

I’m a journalist who writes reviews of Linux distributions and their suitability for New Users. Kubuntu 7.10 failed miserably. It was unable to setup wifi cards on 6 out of 6 machines. It’s interesting to note that Mandriva 2008.0 setup the wifi cards, some without any user intervention, on all 6 of the same machines. I’ll put a link here when the article is published.

@JMaxwell Really? I’d like to read that article. Well, as with most Linux distros, they do list what hardware are supported or not. I haven’t used Mandriva in ages so your article is something I definitely want to see.

I’ve taken the liberty of posting pre-edit copies of both articles on one of my website. You can fnd them at http://bogcatlinux.com/mandriva.html and http://bigcatlinux.com/kufailure.html respectively.
Note system specs are printed with the final article.

@JMaxwell: I just finished reading your two reviews. I can’t say that I’ve tested Kubuntu 7.10. In any case, Gutsy Gibbon hasn’t failed me much. My wifi actually works better now except that I don’t know if I messed up anything for it to uninstall the firmware. In any case, looks like that the current Mandriva version is working well with your system and that’s a very good thing. :)
