The Free World: Web Browsers.

by Jon on December 1st, 2005

I have a bit of a reputation for being too harsh on Firefox. It’s not that I don’t like Firefox, I just think that the hype is waaaay higher than it should be. I don’t think it’s that bad, but I don’t think it’s that good, either.

I will say that Firefox is my browser of choice on GNU/Linux - it’s the Windows version that I don’t think is all that hot. In all honesty, when I’m on a Windows machine, I use IE. It’s faster, all web pages work in it, and since it’s not my machine I’m not concerned about the security problem with it :)

It took me a while to realize why people would get so upset with me for bashing on Firefox. I mean, really, just pick another browser, right? Then it dawned on me: Windows and Mac users really have a small pool of web browsers to pick from. How many viable web browsers are there for Windows and Mac? 3? 4?

For Windows I see IE, Firefox, and Opera. For Mac I see Safari, IE, Opera, and Firefox.

How many viable browsers are there for GNU/Linux? I honestly don’t know. Installed on my machine right now are Mozilla, Firefox, and Konqueror. I’ve also used Opera, Flock, and Galeon at different times.

There’s 44 ‘current’ ones on this page alone, and another schwak-load of older ones below the main list.

I’m not naive enough to think that all of the browsers in that list work, but I have been through that list before and tried a lot of them. Many of them are based on Mozilla since that’s the most obvious open-source choice, but it’s interesting to see what people have done with it.

Take a look at the list if you have half a day and are feeling intrepid. At least you have choice.
