The Free World: Sub $300 Linspire Desktops.
I don’t know where the hell the name Koobox came from, but I like it.
Koobox is a line of desktop computers available from Mirus that is only offered with the Linspire GNU/Linux distro. Sure other OEMs offer Linux, but I think the Koobox is the only line that will only ship with GNU/Linux.
From the Koobox FAQ:
Can I order the Koobox with other operating systems?
The Koobox is only sold pre-installed, tested and certified with Linspire Linux, but because it is optimized to work with desktop Linux, you may be able to get it to work with other Linux distrubtions, but there is no guarantee for this.
I get miffed at Dell when I try to order anything other than Windows, so it gives me a warm fuzzy to know that Mirus is telling customers (maybe right now) that they can’t have Windows on their Koobox.
There are three models in the Koobox line:
- Essential: $299
- Multimedia: $399
- Performance: $499
Unfortunately the Koobox is only available in the US right now, but hopefully they’ll become available up here in Canada in the near future. I’d like to own something called a Koobox.

Those are pretty sweet! Would probably make a nice little server box if you had a static IP and wanted to host some gaming or webpage files.

No kidding, eh? I’m Canadian so I have to add 20% or so for conversion, but they’re still a pretty good deal.
Now if they would only deliver to Canada…
