The Free World: ODOS - tuXfiles
Today’s ODOS site is tuXfiles. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be a play on the X-Files or not, but I like it.
tuXfiles mantra:
“Hey, I installed Linux. Now what? What can I do with this thing? Why doesn’t my new shiny Linux system work?”
It’s time to learn how to use your Linux system so you can get your work done. It’s also time to learn how the different and somewhat confusing features of Linux actually work, why those features are great, and how to effectively use the basic and not-so-basic unique features of Linux.
tuXfiles has a nice, clean interface and a lot of good documents. Right off the front page there are links to help files detailing how to move around the command line and how to move/copy files. Useful stuff for a newbie, but I have to wonder how many users actually use the command line anymore.
Whenever I taught something on The GNU/Linux User Show, I would always use the command line tools. I did this because I felt it was more distro-agnostic, but I took some criticism for it. I’d like to see more GUI tools explained :)
One notably different thing about tuXfiles is that there are no forums. No forums, wow! Actually, I’m totally OK with that - there are enough forums out there and with Google indexing them all, I don’t see why one would be better than another.

Jon,
One command line tool I hear very little about is mc (Midnight Commander). It’s a terminal mode two panel filemanager/swiss army knife. Every distro and even most rescue cd’s have it. It’s great. TS

Good point, Tim. I’ve used MC off and on and like its speed.
Entry on it coming up!
