The Free World: ODOS - Linux Self Help

by Jon on January 11th, 2006

Todays ODOS site is Linux Self-Help.

When I first visited this site, I thought that I had hit a splog rather than a legitimate Linux site. The main page looks a hell of a lot like your typical spam blog, but a more careful look revealed that I was wrong. It was the utter lack of ads that tweaked me that I was probably not looking at a splog. Linux Self-Help is the real deal.

The site is broken down in many categories and sub categories, all nicely indexed on the front page. There’s also a link to forums which is a must-have for a help site, in my opinion. The GNU/Linux community needs places to share information and ideas and forums are ideal for this type of interaction. Further, all the FAQs and HOWTOs in the world are going to miss some subjects and the ability to ping other members of the community for help is critical.

The forums are reasonably active with many of them having recent posts from this month. Several are a little slower such as the Kernel and Systems forum which hasn’t had a post since August.

The category and sub-category links on the front page lead to a really spectacular set of HOWTOs. While the documents are written by different authors, the format is standard which makes them easy to either read from head to tail, or skim the contents looking for a specific point. I’m blown away by these HOWTOs - they generally look quite complete and well written. Later tonight I’m going to grab one on something that I want to figure out and give it a practical whirl.

Give Linux Self Help a shot next time you’re looking for information on a tricky task. You may find what you’re looking for.
