The Free World: ODOS - Linux Forums.

by Jon on January 13th, 2006

Today’s ODOS site is Linux Forums. I actually got kind of attached to the place while I was there. There’s lots to look at and lots to read.

One of the things that I instantly liked about Linux Forums is the AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). It’s got a few spelling errors, but who cares - the spirit of it is really nice:

Everyone involved tries hard to keep Linux Forums free of trolls, spam, flames etc and keep Linux Forums a positive place to discuss linux and other things, while at the same time trying to maintain the balance of a open and fairly non-restrictive community. Obviously as a publicly accessable community we have guidelines of what is acceptable any what is not acceptable so we remain just that - a happy, vibrant community.

Linux Forums does one thing well. It has forums. Oh, and an IRC channel which is cool. My point is that many sites try to be ‘all things GNU/Linux’ and have downloads and reviews and forums and whatever else I can’t think of right now. There’s nothing wrong with that, but generally when a site focusses on one thing, they end up doing it pretty well.

The Linux Forums forums have thousands of posts each. There are the predictable distro-specific forums as well as installation, games, networking, security, and latop discussions. A nice, wide range.

The layout of the forums is a little different than I’m used to. When I click on a topic I expect a linear list of posts and responses. Linux Forums uses vBulletin which (apparently) has the option to display the topic’s thread tree at the top of the page. You can then click on response titles to read the posts. It took me aback at first, but I got used to it pretty quick.

Did I mention the IRC channel? I hung out there for a few moments. There was an awful lot of people in it, but not a lot of talking. To be honest, I don’t know how useful an IRC channel is in a lot of cases, but it’s still a nice addition to a site.

I enjoyed the feel of Linux Forums and recommend that you take a trip by there the next time you’re looking for a little help.
