The Free World: Goobuntu
Stumbled across this in The Register today:
Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software.
A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as ‘Goobuntu’.
Google has confirmed it is working on a desktop linux project called Goobuntu, but declined to supply further details, including what the project is for.
Goobuntu? I would have thought they’d try for GLinux.

According to Ars Technica, Google has denied these rumors. But they do use Ubuntu internally, hence Goobuntu.

Hmm…I wonder what the Register means by “Google has confirmed it is working on a desktop linux project…”
I guess we’ll see :)

Chris DiBona did confirm that they use a version of Ubuntu on their desktop in the slashdot posts’ comments. So obviously it exists. They just haven’t admitted that they’re gonna distribute it. Oh praise the father in heaven I hope so. Finally we might get flawless hardware support. And maybe even *gasp* codec support!
