Surround Sound in Ubuntu

by Kyle on February 9th, 2007

Arsgeek has a great tutorial on how to setup surround sound in Ubuntu using ALSA. The process is really simple and I will explain it below. Note: Surround sound can (obviously) only be used on computers with the hardware to support it.

Open a terminal and type the following:

gksudo gedit .asoundrc

After gedit opens, copy and paste the following into the file and save it in your home directory:

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm “surround51″
slave.channels 6
route_policy duplicate
}

After this process, if you have the hardware, enjoy the tunes/movie!
