Speaking of home servers…
I saw that Pinoy Tux posted images showing the benefits of a home server. It seems to be a promotional material for the Windows Home Server but let’s get some information that would be beneficial for us.
One, it talks of setting up a home server. It is possible with Linux. In fact, Linux Watch even has a guide on how to make a home server with Linux Mint. (If you’re curious, go see what Linux Mint is about.) You don’t need Windows Home Server anymore when you could set one up using one of your machines at home and by installing Linux. The guide on Linux Watch mentions that there might be difficulty using Windows Vista with it but they also gave a link that would help users set it up if needed (making Vista work with Samba).
Two, the benefits of a home server. Aside from shared files, managing your downloads, and having shared apps, you could also probably do something as funky as setting it up so that you could switch your appliances using your Linux home server. Maybe it would take a skilled Linux user but maybe even new users could do something like this with some research and confidence that they could.
Three, it mentions at the end of the series of images that it’s using a Windows Home Server. Well, it might as well have been any home server for that matter and for all intents and purposes, let’s use Linux because we can. :)

A pre-configured home server installation is available from http://www.amahi.org
It offers alot more than you would expect, including VPN setup “out of the box,” user/file sharing, a WebDav server for calendar management, a Wiki, and a host of other apps.
Take a look …
