Slow posting days on Dvorak

by Clair on February 12th, 2008

Been seciously typing using that layout and it has been tough. I wish I could type faster but can’t because of the getting used to it part. I still switch to QWERTY sometimes but I know I must wean myself away from it so I could give my wrists the rest that it needs.

One thing I like about learning Dvorak is that it makes me more conscious about what I type. But yeah, it is tough. Waah!

And as I wrote before I am really planning to totally switch to this keyboard layout eventually. I might still type using QWERTY from time to time but only when I am probably too excited to post. ;)

For those who tried out the links I posted before and are learning Dvorak now, I am hoping that you’re faring better than I am. We can do this together!

You ought to try Colemak instead.

It took me over a month to get fast enough on Dvorak to be able to use it at all — even though I abandoned qwerty altogether — and I eventually gave up after four attempts. On the other hand, I managed to get up to speed on Colemak surprisingly fast — I had a usable speed up with it after only three evenings, and the transition was almost painless in the end.

Colemak is much closer to qwerty than Dvorak — it only moves seventeen keys around, compared with 33 on Dvorak, and only two change hands, yet it is very comfortable and ergonomic.

These days I strongly recommend against Dvorak given that there is an alternative that is so much better.
