New Linux User

PS and Kill

by Kyle on April 18th, 2007

Arsgeek has a tutorial for beginners that introduces the new user to the ps and kill terminal commands. If you’re a seasoned Linux pro then this will be old hat, however, it’s a great tutorial for the beginner, or if you’ve only graphically killed applications. Here’s the skinny:

Ever find yourself on a Linux box with a program that just won’t die? You click the X if it’s graphical or you sit in command mode land and watch via the top command as a process eats up your resources. Here’s a quick and dirty way to get rid of this pesky program. You kill it!

But how? You ask. How does one kill a runaway program? Let’s open up a command line interface and we’ll go through the process. First, you’ll want to identify the program (either your system will be really slow with nothing visible running or you’ll have a crashed program sitting on top of your GUI being annoying).

Head over to Arsgeek to get the full scoop.
