Pause for thought: Linux hardware support

by George Bunyan on November 12th, 2006

Next time you are told that linux has terrible hardware support compared to windows stop and think about it.

Remember the last piece of hardware you installed under windows. It most likely involved installing 3rd party drivers, often with unavoidable 3rd party software, then restarting, then plugging in your hardware, then often one more restart for good luck.

Now think about the last piece of hardware you installed in linux. You probably just plugged it in and let the system do it’s magic, didn’t you?

Remember that linux is surrounded by FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) so always think twice when someone makes a statement like that.

Happy hardware,

I am a Windows user/programmer who has built an Ubuntu box from old computer parts. The only hardware I had to buy was a ‘Sound Blaster live’ sound card. It worked fine without any need to install sound card drivers or other software.

My video card worked without the need for any software drivers, except I cannot get any higher resolution than 1024×768. When the video card ran in a windows machine it could get a resolution of 1280×1024.

Linux will work with most hardware at least 1 year old. Basic features of the hardware will work but the advanced features of the hardware need drivers .
