Nautilus quick tips

by Clair on April 4th, 2008

Nautilus as a file manager is quite nifty especially when you know how to use the address bar. Killer tech tips has some Nautilus URIs to share with us:

  • computer:///
Shows Computer, lists the disk partitions
  • network:///
    Shows the network locations
  • fonts:///
Lists the fonts installed on the system
  • burn:///
    Opens the CD Writing Window
  • themes:///
Lists the themes available for the Gnome Desktop
  • system-settings:///
    Gives access to system settings

I knew about browsing samba shares using smb:/// even before and ftp://ip-address because I used to use them a lot. (I’ve been using Firefox’s Fireftp plugin more often these days if I need to get or upload some files from the FTP server.) It’s also nifty when you’re figuring out where in the directory your files are and you don’t need to click because tab completion of the paths are available.

To get this location/address bar, press CTRL-L then it will show up and you could type the path there. :)
