Marketing Linux in libraries

by Clair on May 21st, 2008

Speaking of librarians and open source software, there’s a foundation created to bring them to the public. Webpath Technologies, Inc. has announced the creation of Public Software Foundation. They want to distribute open source software to the public via libraries.

I agree with the way that they are distributing open source software because libraries are a place where everyone’s encouraged to read and try something new. Or build upon their existing skills/knowledge. In the Philippines, librarians have difficulty in acquiring budget for the library and what more for the computers and software. A foundation like this would probably be the best recourse for librarians.

Which reminds me. I think I’d have to email some of my former classmates in library scool about how they are doing these days. I’d point out to them that there are local Linux user groups where they could join and be a part of the community. I guess this is really where the sense of community will factor in a lot.

Learning is an important aspect of everyone’s lives. Libraries are facilities that foster that. It’s time to work together along with schools so that we could improve ourselves. If we could learn through technology we have to find out how to make it happen and we could learn from this foundation’s example.
