Mandriva 2008 beta 2 slated for spring!
Wondering what other distro to check out? Well, there’s the upcoming second beta of Mandriva 2008 this spring. :D Mandriva as a distro is quite different from Ubuntu but I’ve used it earlier (when it was still Mandrake) and it has a nifty set of default packages included in it.
Here are the major components of the release:
- kernel 2.6.24
- X.org 7.3
- KDE 3.5.8 and 4.0
- GNOME 2.22
- Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11
- OpenOffice.org 2.3.0.
There will be three different types of Mandriva downloads:
- One Edition - This comes with proprietary drivers (All you Broadcom users, etc. might have to get this one)
- Powerpack - This one has third-party proprietary apps and support.
- Free edition - This one is all free packages. (Might be problematic for new Linux users who might be needing some of the drivers.) But it says on the wiki that there is an open source Invidia driver so you might not have to fret if you’re using Invidia for graphics.
The detailed specs of Mandriva 2008 are here.
