Linux OS-tans

by Clair on September 27th, 2007

I’ve been sick the past two days and I’ve only been catching up on my mail and RSS feeds today. In any case, that Slashdot article about the nerd auction led me to a comment that suggested a cosplay event with OS-tans and I got curious. I first learned about Linux OS-tans in 2005, when my friends and I were thinking of what to do for an event. It’s only today that I am updated on the OS-tans.

Ubuntu OS-tan - She used to be a scantily-clad girl with a shawl but it seems that there’s a new version of her, courtesy of Juzo-kun. (Though it’s not that new, considering it was also out last 2005.) In any case, she looks more mature especially in that armor she’s wearing.

Hmmm, according to further research though, Juzo-kun already had a sketch including Ubuntu-chan. I saw the sketch on a Flickr account. That was the same sketch I saw in June that year. The sketch? Here it is:

There are now other OS-tans like Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux and NepaLinux, among others. My personal favorite Linux OS-tans are still Slackware and Arch Linux. Slackware looks like the mechanic-type, kinda like Firefly’s Kaylee. And I guess up to now, Slackware Linux is one of the ‘more technical’ distros out there. As my friend keeps joking, “you must be a masochist if you want to install Slackware.” (Or maybe not so much. Considering we have Nimblex, among others. Hmmm. I haven’t really tinkered around with Slackware yet so I wouldn’t be able to say.) Arch Linux still looks girly because of the dress but geeky enough because of her hair and her glasses.

Cosplaying Linux OS-tans would be quite fun and cute, if ever there’s going to be some kind of event allowing it. Or maybe a geek party! ;) I just wish that there’d be Linux OS-kuns too so that there’d be equal representation. :D
