“Linux is better than Windows”

I was reading one of kamotegirl’s more recent blog entries and found myself agreeing with her that Linux is better than Windows. I know I am biased, but still she does make herself clear on why she thinks that way. My experience with Windows and Linux makes me agree with her. Where Linux wins, as she pointed out:

1. Hardware requirements. Linux definitely wins here. For more bling, you need less RAM. Though there might be issues with your graphics card… If your graphics card is supported, you would probably have no issues with all the Compiz goodness.
2. Security issues — not so much of a big problem with Linux. I recall that last June, my Windows partition had a virus problem and I was able to clean it using ClamAV while I was booted on Ubuntu. Linux and ClamAV saved the day!
3. As for licenses and stuff like that, users don’t need to worry about redistributing copies of Linux. PCLinuxOS users could freely share the love! Ubuntu users have ShipIt, even! And some groups have burnfests so that others who are curious about Linux could try them out.
4. Digital content is no issue on Linux, as kamotegirl pointed out. I like her words: “With Linux, you can play anything you want, just as long as you are using the legal stuff.”
5. The apps you need are there. Most of it, that is. With all those repositories, packages and source files maintained by so many people out there, you could choose them. Distributions come with an office suite, a web browser, drivers for your other devices like printers, and so on. And all you need is to download and install the distro.

kamotegirl might be biased but, hey, she’s got a point. If not for these things, some of my friends and co-workers would still be stuck with Windows. But no! Some of them have actually seen the good points of Linux and it’s great to see them actually liking Linux. How about you? Do you agree with kamotegirl too? :)
