I want an Aspire One!

by Clair on August 23rd, 2008

I just heard that some of my co-workers will be assigned Acer Aspire One machines and I wish I could use the same for work but it still lacks the power I need for certain tasks.

But seriously, a small Linux netbook for presentations, surfing the net, for communicating with family and colleagues would be great for those days that I’d like to be more mobile and when my tasks don’t require much. And it’s on Linux~! Hooray! Now that I have a portable hard drive too, I think that a netbook like the Acer Aspire One would be great for me. :D

Not just for me but professional bloggers, for those who are often on the field and writers who just need time to be away and still focus on writing.

For now, I’d love to be able to test an Aspire One maybe for a week and see how it suits me in reality.

I’ve been using an Aspire One for 2 weeks now : it’s a nice little machine : 3 drawbacks :
    - the battery seems to be very low-end (more than 10% wear in 2 weeks)
    - the CPU fan is a bit noisy
    - the Linpus UI is too basic, and doesn’t seem to be removable (without installing another distro).

Other than that it is quite comfortable to have a light computer always at hand.

I literally just got mine two days ago. It’s a great little machine. Seems to be quick enough, and the keyboard is very easy to get used to. The Linpus distro is the most restrictive I’ve ever used. It takes some tinkering to even get to a terminal. you can tweak it to be slightly less restrictive, but even once you get to the package manager, most of the packages are six months out of date. There are some dependency issues, as well. When trying to install pidgin no matter which version I selected, the wrong version of libpurple was installed. I’m in the process of setting up an xubuntu installation for it. As the other commenter said, it’s very nice to have a computer that’s solid enough and light enough to literally take anywhere.
