HOWTO: Use a Non-Standard Mail Port in Evolution.

by Jon on March 9th, 2006

Novell’s Evolution (formerly Ximian Evolution) is the closest thing GNU/Linux has to Microsoft Outlook. Evolution is a full-blown personal information manager with calendar, contacts, tasks, and email. On the business side of things, it can also authenticate to an LDAP server and publish calendars. I’m sure I’ve missed 90% of its features, but all we really care about here is email.

Most email programs have a spot to specify the port that you’d like it to connect to the server with. Not so with Evolution. It has the default ports associated with whatever protocal you pick (IMAP = 143, POP = 110, etc). If you want to use a protocol on a non-standard port, you can tell Evolution that like so:

Edit -> Preferences -> Select mail account -> Edit -> Receiving Mail tab -> Host text field.

Enter the host:port such as imap.myisp.com:1143 to connect to your ISP’s IMAP mail server on port 1143.

Enjoy!
