HOWTO: Restore a Missing Menu Icon in KDE
I recently had a menu icon go AWOL for no apparent reason on my KDE menu. I figured out how to restore it pretty quickly, but thought that the process may not be that intuitive for some. Here’s a little howto on how I did it:

- Right-click on the KDE K button and select the Menu Editor option
- In the resulting KDE Menu Editor window, navigate through the menu on the left-hand side to find the offending menu option and click on it
- At the top right of the right-hand side pane (beside the application name) is a button. In most cases this button contains a large version of the application icon. In this case, though, it will likely just display the generic document icon or no icon at all. In any case, click it
- This will open the Select Icon window. There are two types of icons to choose from: System Icons and Other Icons. System Icons should be selected by default which is what we want
- Each of the System Icons and Other Icons radio boxes have their own drop down list box associated with them. Only the System Icons drop down list box should be enabled since that’s the type we’ve selected. The default selection in the drop down list box is Applications. That will be fine for what we’re doing
- Either use the Search box to find the icon that went missing (hint: the icon and the application usually have the same name. Therefore if I am looking for my AMOR icon, I should search for AMOR), or just scroll through the list to select the one that you’d like
- Click the icon you’d like and the Select Icon window closes with your new selection replacing the generic document icon from step 3
- Click the disk icon below the File menu, or click File -> Save to save your choice
- Click the window’s exit (X) button to leave the Menu Editor
Voila! Your icon is restored.
