HOWTO: Move Your Windows Files and Settings to GNU/Linux

by Jon on February 6th, 2006

Apparently I slept through this announcement just before Christmas. In the never-ending quest to make money out of the “operating system that will never make it into the home market”, yet another company has produced a Windows to Linux migration tool.

Versora released Progression Desktop on December 21st last year. Who launches something 4 days before Christmas? Honestly. That was tied to someone’s bonus, I’d wager.

This is a joint venture with Linspire so I don’t know how well Progression Desktop would work with other distros. I’m also not about to put Windows back on my machine to try it. Thankfully, however, Jem Matzan was willing and he documented his experiences here.

At first glance it seemed to work pretty well for Jem. He made some observations that would make the migration process more intuitive, but over all it seemed to work.

By far my most precious asset is my email. I switched to GMail a few months ago and therefore I can’t think of any real reason why I would want to use a migration tool. I mean, the reason I’m leaving Windows is to leave Windows, isn’t it? But I’m all for anything that makes the migration easier for users and anything that might pique a little curiousity in someone. The more tools out there, the better chance we have of converting people.

Has anyone tried Progression Desktop or have any experience with it?
