HOWTO: Make Screen Captures with KSnapshot

by Jon on October 19th, 2005

Ksnapshop is a KDE application that has come installed on every KDE installation I’ve ever used. It’s fast, clean, and handy. If you don’t have it installed for some reason, you can apt-get install ksnaphot or yum install ksnapshot or get it from here.

  • Start Ksnapshot either by rooting through your menu to find it, or (if you’re in KDE) pressing Alt+F2 and typing ksnapshot into the run command field
  • Set the Capture Mode drop down to the area that you would like Ksnapshot to capture. This sets the area that Ksnapshot wil capture when you click or drag the mouse cursor (depending on what you pick): Full Screen will capture the full screen when you click the mouse, Window will capture the window under the cursor when you click the mouse; and Region will capture the area that you specify when you click and drag your mouse cursor on the screen
  • Once you’ve got your Capture Mode set, click the New Snapshot button and Ksnapshot will minimize itself
  • If you’ve selected either Full Screen, then click your mouse; if you’ve selected Window, then click your mouse over the window you’d like to capture; if you’ve selected Region then click and drag your mouse to select the region you want captured
  • Release your mouse button and presto! Ksnapshot pops up with your new capture previewed in its little window
  • If you’re happy with your capture, click the Save As or Print button (depending on what you’d like to do with your capture)
  • Select the appropriate printer options or file directory options and you’re done!

Screenshots are an excellent way to spice up an article, blog entry, or tutorial (yes, I recognize the irony of not having screenshots in a Ksnapshot HOWTO).

Doesn´t anyone else have the problem that ksnapshot comes up when you accidently press PrintScreenSysRq? (its badly placed on my keyboard)
i can´t find how to turn it off!

    Hi Ben,

I’ve never pressed my print screen button to see what happens in GNU/Linux. I’ll check it out.

Are you using KDE, Gnome, or something else? I may be able to figure out how to shut that off and get back to you.

You can disable it by removing the actual PrtScrn key. That is what I did. I don’t know why KDE has all these badly designed shortcuts that you can’t change.
