HOWTO: Install GNU/Linux.
I’m surprised I haven’t blogged about this before. There are many GNU/Linux installation guides out there on the net, but this one by Eric Raymond is one of the better ones I’ve seen. Possibly the best.
Eric Raymond may be best known for writing the Cathedral and the Bazaar and is one of the more colourful characters in the Open Source community. Love him or hate him, he knows Linux and Open Source.
Eric’s Linux Installation HOWTO covers everything from pre-installation system auditing right up to custom boot manager configuration. The table of contents makes the document look more daunting than it actually is. There are 9 chapters in the TOC, but many of them are just a few pages long. I read the entire document in under 10 minutes but that was a general read to get a feel for the document. If I was reading it with the intent to install a GNU/Linux distro I would have to read it a little more carefully.
If you haven’t installed a distro yet, or if you’re looking for more information on how to make your next installation go more smoothly, I highly recommend giving Eric’s HOWTO a read.

Can you write a post or make a podcast on how to update the kernel for Kubuntu? I noticed they only update the kernel with the release of new versions of the distro, and some of the steps suggested on the boards there seem a little unwieldy.

Hey Joshua,
Hmm…I don’t have high hopes for doing a show on that. Perhaps I can eek out a blog entry in the near future.
It’s a great idea and I’d intrigued about doing it, but the truth is I don’t have a spare box to throw Kubuntu on to and do the kernel update. And without actually doing it and taking step-by-step notes…well…it would be a crappy article to say the least.
Kelly did just rearrange the basement area where I have my testing rack, though. There’s a chance I can actually get in there now…I may give it a whirl.
Crappy answer, eh?
