HOWTO: Install Gizmo on K/Ubuntu.

by Jon on March 24th, 2006

This information is widely available on the Gizmo Project website, but I’ve seen a lot of queries being run on New Linux User for this type of information. So here it is!

Background: I find that the easiest way to think of Gizmo is to compare it to Skype. Gizmo is an Instant Messaging client and a VoIP client. I find that the GNU/Linux version of Gizmo has some real advantages over the GNU/Linux version of Skype. The most immediately useful feature to me is the one-button record function in Gizmo. As a podcaster, I tend to record a lot of calls. With Skype on Linux, my only real option is to use some scripts to capture the sound going to and coming from the sound card. This is cumbersome to say the least and I’ve lost more than one interview that way. The other features that I like are free voicemail, a free 775 (US) area code incoming number and a decent outgoing call rate. Plus the interface is nicely polished unlike Skype which has been ignored for so long that it’s really starting to look dated.

To install Gizmo on K/Ubuntu download and install the following files in this oder:

  1. Bonjour
  2. libsipphoneapi (OSS or ALSA)
  3. And finally, Gizmo itself.

    i was just curious about gizmo a while back… the website does not seem to make it clear if we can make voice calls to others connected to google servers through gtalk…can we only “chat” with them or can we also “talk” with them with gizmo?

    Hey Ganesh,

    I wouldn’t think that you can talk with GTalk users because (unless I’m mistaken) GTalk doesn’t have that capability. There’s no way for GTalk users to..well…talk, ya know?

    Wow..I had no idea you can talk with Google Talk. I’ve never even looked at it because it’s not availble for Linux. All I’ve ever seen of it is that little window in my GMail inbox.

    Learn something new every day :)

    To answer your question though, no. I can’t talk to my GTalk contacts. The ‘Call’ option is greyed out when I click on their names.

    Jon, would you happen to know how to customize sound settings on Gizmo? Unfortunately, they are grayed out on my Ubuntu Dapper Drake Gizmo installation.

    Any advice, pointers are welcome! Feel free to share them here:

    Hi!

    Thanks for your writeup.

    I followed the steps on the GizmoProject page and what you have here, and downloaded the three debs, to install.

    However, when I try to install bonjour, this is what happens:
    =======
    sudo dpkg -i bonjour_107.1-0.0.0.50.linspire0.2_i386.deb
    (Reading database … 204610 files and directories currently installed.)
    Unpacking bonjour (from bonjour_107.1-0.0.0.50.linspire0.2_i386.deb) …
    dpkg: error processing bonjour_107.1-0.0.0.50.linspire0.2_i386.deb (–install):
    trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libdns_sd.so.1′, which is also in package libavahi-compat-libdnssd1
    dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    bonjour_107.1-0.0.0.50.linspire0.2_i386.deb
    =======

    libavahi-compat-libdnssd1 appears to be needed by one or more of kdebase ksysguard ksysguardd kubuntu-desktop.

    Is there any way out that you can suggest?

    Thanks.
