HOWTO: Get My CD Drive to Eject on my GNU/Linux Machine.
If your CD drive won’t open for you, there’s a few things you can try:
- Unmount it: right-click the CD-drive icon and select ‘Unmount’. It may be hidden under a submenu called ‘actions’ or something like that. Then press the CD-drive eject button.
- Eject it: right-click the CD-drive icon and select ‘Eject’. It may be hidden under a submenu called ‘actions’ or something like that. If it doesn’t eject by itself try pressing the CD-drive button
- If your drive won’t Unmount, do it as root: open a terminal, type su -c umount /mnt/cdrom (your device may be different). Enter the root password. Notice that the command is missing the first ‘n’. It is umount, not unmount. Now press the CD-drive eject button.
If all this fails, then you have bigger problems. However, in an emergency you can always get a CD out of any drive by sticking a straightened paper-clip or needle into the little hole in the drive door.
