HOWTO: Check My System RAM With “Free”.

by Jon on March 15th, 2006

Free CommandFree is a command line application which can give you a quick and dirty look at how your memory is faring during operation.

As you’ve likely figured out by now, to run free open up a console and type free.

This image is of my laptop’s memory usage during operation. I have 512MB of RAM, but 64MB of it is shared for video.

Free will also give you a quick look at how much of your swap partition you’re using. Ironically, using free (or perhaps one of the other memory tools) is how I discovered once that I didn’t actually have a swap partition.

You don’t even have to be root!
