HOWTO: Change Runlevels
GNU/Linux steps through a series of runlevels when booting up. The two most common runlevels are 3 and 5. Runlevel 3 is the command-line and runlevel 5 is the full GUI interface.
There are times when it would be nice to just restart the current runlevel or step up to the next runlevel rather than rebooting the entire machine. As home users, I think we’re more likely to just reboot, but you have options.
Slackware, for example, only boots to runlevel 3 by default. If I wanted to run the full GUI (like KDE) I would have to tell it to go to runlevel 5. To do so, I would type:
init 5
You can also just type startx, but that’s cheating.
