HOWTO: Cause Lilo (Bootloader) To Recognize Changes
I have to admit that I’ve never actually use the bootloader Lilo. I’ve never really had the opportunity to make a choice between GRUB and Lilo because every distro I’ve ever installed has used GRUB and since it’s never given me any problems, I’ve never considered changing it.
There are some people out there that use Lilo, though, either by choice or circumstance. If you’re one of them, you may have noticed that making changes to the Lilo configuration requires an extra step that GRUB doesn’t require. In short, if you make any changes to Lill’s configuration files or any of the names of the files that Lilo references, you must update Lilo for it to be aware of these changes. Not doing so may render Lilo unable to boot your machine.
The command to update Lilo is simply (as the superuser):
/sbin/lilo
This assumes that the Lilo binary is located in your sbin directory. If it’s not, you may have to hunt around a bit for it.
