by Kyle on March 28th, 2007

Arsgeek has an excellent tutorial that demonstrates how to install Beryl on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. The Ubuntu team has streamlined the process, however it still requires some configuration. I find the tutorials at Arsgeek to be really helpful and very good for a beginner. If you are having trouble getting Beryl going in Feisty Fawn, feel free to leave your questions in the comments and I’ll help you get going.

As far as I know, Ubuntu 7.04 - Feisty Fawn uses Compiz for Desktop Effects, NOT Beryl.

(Ubuntu Linux 7.04 “Feisty Fawn”)same with arsis…when enable the desktop effect, my screen turn to white… :((
    i’m using ATI Radeon x200..
but, when i install beryl, i just can use the cube, wobble, and zoom effect, the rest seems like not working.. is it because i’ve installed beryl and xgl incorrectly? if yes, can someone give me full instruction and examples on how to install it? if no, is it because of my graphic card or something else? please help me… :((

I am having the same as Arsis above Kyle,

(by the way, I love it when I search for something and find another b5er writing about it)

I have an install of Feisty on a emachine that I am trying to get to work for a guy in our church who needs a computer.

I can’t get “desktop effects” to work, but they did work on the live cd before I installed. What’s up with that?

Ubuntu and ATI cards, sometimes the open-source drivers do not work as they should and it is advised to install the driver availible (FGLRX) on ati’s website (which was relased on 23rd jul 07 and has fixed my black screen problem when trying to enable 3d accel) Also, 7.04 comes with a preinstalled compiz which seems to be lacking some features - at the moment im trying to figure out which ones and to get them running :) - that’s how I got here.
I strongly advise to all of you guys here to visit ubuntuforums.org and do a search on your problem - someone had it most probably before you and found a solution. WELCOME TO THE UBUNTU EXPERIECE!

    cheers!

    Hi

In my xorg.conf file within section “module” it appears that i am missing
    Load “dri”
    Load “dbe”.

Could this be the reason why ‘Beryl’ works only on a horizontal view as opposed to the cube effect?
Or do I have to input the missing config to activate it?

guys really… the problems you get with your white screens are quite common ( i had to fight for three weeks with ubuntu to install my card - ati x1300) go to ubuntuforums.org and i assure you that you will find a solution to your problem.
In a pill I can tell you that most probably you got the wrong driver installed. To save yourself from a blank screen do the following:
    reboot
when it asks you to choose the OS (if u got multiple)
    choose (life) recovery mode
    when in command line type:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    choose VESA as your driver
then you’ll need to answer all the other questions the config wizz asks you.
    reboot
it should be ok. or you done the config bad - i have for the first dozens of times.
if you’ve got a dell DOWNLOAD FGLRX from ATI’s website the open driver then go to FGLRX wiki and use method 2 to install (google it)
if you’re a Nvidia user than your accel problem should be nonexistent.
    For ATI users:
to use compiz and beryl you have to have XGL installed (u can use synaptic) and when booting and shown the login screen please click options in the lower right corner and choose sessions>XGL.
the Beryl and Compiz and Desktop Effx should be working ok.
ATI doesn’t support Aiglx… not yet at least.
im sorry if im not clear enough but im not the best explainer… visit ubuntuforums.org for better explanations.

    cheerioo
