New Linux User

Hello, World!

by Jon on September 28th, 2005

What the heck?Welcome to the New Linux User site! I’m Jon and I’ll be your host along with b5 Media on this wacky ride through GNU/Linux-ville.

We’ve been working really, really hard over the past few dayshours to get this site up and running for you. Between all-night cocktailworking parties and Kraft Dinner Kraft Dinner we’re beat! But it was alllll worth it.

OK, to be honest I don’t know what the template looks like right now. We put up this stock template so I’d have something to look at while waiting for the official b5 template. I don’t know when that thing’s gonna appear, but if I know Jeremy it will just magically appear at some point during the day..or the next one…or the next one. So you’ll probably know before I do that the new template is in. Exciting huh?

Yeah…try to contain yourself while I go through the standard ‘welcome to my site and love me’ rigamarole.

Why the hell are you running another GNU/Linux thingy?

Why not? Huh? You wanna make something of it?

Sorry. Not enough sleep. Yes, it’s true I already host The GNU/Linux User Show podcast and I’m the technology blogger over at Jurgle (what the hell kind of a name is Jurgle, anyhow??) plus running my own blog. Some might think that’s too much, but some would be wrong. I have no ‘off’ switch and this damned GNU/Linux thing is so positive that I just can’t get enough of it.

Having said that, this site is different though. The only thing (I hope) you’re going to find here is short, surgically precise HOWTOs and Explanations on things that new users stumble across. A lot of this stuff is drawn from my own personal experience, but another big handful comes from our podcast listeners.

I’ve almost forgotten how stupid some GNU/Linux commands can appear at first and second and third glance.

The idea here is that users can find quicky and dirty info on whatever is ailing them, right away.

Oh, and beer money. We’re also doing this for beer money.

What the hell do you know about GNU/Linux, anyhow?

My, aren’t we surly this morning? Perhaps a cup of coffee might be in order before you come a’blogging, little Timmy.

The short answer is: nothing. That’s right, I know virtually nothing about GNU/Linux. I’ve only been using it for a little over a year, I’ve never developed on it, and I’ve only tried about three different distros.

All of which makes me the perfect presenter guinea pig. I don’t know any better to not try a bunch of stupid things and then pass all that info on to you to relieve you of your pain. I’m also so nOOb that I don’t even realize how stupid I look when I can’t figure out that I’m supposed to be typing ‘ls’ and not ‘LS’.

So there.

Bully.

Allright, I want to send you a little HOWTO or Explanation that I know of so you don’t hurt your own stupid self. How do I do that?

Umm…thanks. I think.

Email me at me@jonwatson.ca. I can put my email address in the clear here because I have a bad-ass anti-spam system. If you send me email, you will probably receive an email challenge back from my server to verify that you are not a soul-sucking spammer. You must respond to this challenge or I will not receive your email. Fair warning. You’ll only have to do that once, though.

That’s it. I’m done. I’m exhausted from all the all night partying with chicks who think ‘bloggers’ are l337 work.
