Hardy Heron to succeed Dapper Drake as Ubuntu LTS
It has been announced that the next Ubuntu LTS release (for April 2008) is going to be named Hardy Heron. (And, as far as animal naming conventions go, this has been welcomed by some with snickers.) Anyhow, it’s cool to have them talk about the next LTS release. :D Especially because I’d like to keep using something stable on the desktop at home — my mom freaks out when there’s something new on the computer and especially if that something breaks. I’ve been using Dapper on the desktop at home and so far, it’s been good. No problems at all!
In any case, now that they’ve announced the next LTS release, they’re also encouraging others to pitch ideas for it.
Everyone is welcome to think of and develop ideas for features that could be present in the Hardy Heron release. These ideas are written as specifications (detailed documents outlining how the idea would work and be implemented). You are welcome to add your specifications to https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu.
Want more developer tools? Maybe you could suggest that. Want other tools for the needs of home business users or something like it? Pitch it! ;)

Currently I am running Dapper Drake 6.06.1LTS and never upgraded. I plan to go to Hardy Heron as soon as practical. Will it be possible to install Hardy Heron from Dapper Drake, or must one first pass through the intermediate upgrade steps?

I suppose that there will be support for upgrading directly from Dapper to Heron, from one LTS release to another. Hmm. I suppose they’re preparing for that kind of scenario. :)
