Geeky Fun: Themes and Wallpapers for Gnome and KDE.
I’m a short-lived eye-candy type of guy. By that I mean that I love suiting up my desktop with gDesklet sensors, Superkaramba widgets, flashy wallpaper, and whatever else I can get my hands on. But only for a few days. Sooner or later I get tired of the extra boot time and lag time all the eye-candy brings with it, so I get rid of it all.
For a few weeks.
When I’m in those fits of eye-candyness, though, I run rampant through KDE Look. There’s a Gnome equivalent called GNOME Art which contains eye-candy for…well…the Gnome desktop environment.
A quick Google will turn up a few different places that offer eye-candy , but I’ve found that the largest repositories and the best quality is at KDE Look for KDE (and presumably Gnome Art for Gnome).
KDE-Look has the following categories of goodies:
- Wallpapers
- Themes/Styles
- Window Decorations
- Icons
- Cliparts
- Emoticon Themes
- Kopete Styles
- System Sounds
- Color Schemes
- Screensavers
- Noatun Skins (multimedia player)
- amaroK Themes
- and much, much more.
Gnome Art is organized a little differently and the categories include:
- Backgrounds
- Desktop Themes
- Application Themes
- Border Themes
- Icons
- Login Manager
- Splash Screens
- and more
Again, not being as familiar with the Gnome desktop I haven’t played with Gnome Art as much, but KDE Look is really well laid out. There are screen shots of most of the stuff so you can make some kind of decision before downloading it, and the KDE Desktop Configuration tool allows direct search and download right from the desktop.
Go. Download. Look. Enjoy :)

Hah I know just what you mean. I’ve gone through my share of Superkarmba widgets and transparent window decorations. Then I go on a removal spree and get rid of most of it.
Right now there’s just liquid weather, smiling back at me.
