Geeky Fun: Kool Things to do on the KDE Desktop.

by Jon on October 4th, 2005

There a million cool things about the KDE desktop, but today I’m just going to touch on one.

Most default KDE installations come with an application called KDE World. KDE World is an animated desktop that shows the passage of the sun over the globe. In real time (I suppose…I’ve never actually sat there with a stopwatch.)

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Right-click on the KDE desktop
  2. Select ‘Configure Desktop’
  3. Ensure you are on the ‘Background’ tab and click the ‘Advanced Options’ button on the right side of the window
  4. Click the ‘Use the following program for drawing the background’ checkbox
  5. There are usually two programs listed in the program window: kdeworld and kdewebdesktop. That’s OK.
  6. If you wish to modify how often the map will update, highlight the kdeworld line and click the ‘Modify’ button. Set the ‘Refresh time’ to whatever you would like. I advise against changing any of the other values
  7. Click as many ‘OK” buttons are required to get back to the desktop

I don’t know why, but sometimes it takes a while for the wallpaper to actually change into the KDE World application. Just be patient…it will.
