GEEKY FUN: Flickr Tools for GNU/Linux

by Jon on November 16th, 2005

I use Flickr reasonably heavily as a blogging tool. It’s a great place to store pictures for use on other sites, and it offers a lot of useful services like multiple image sizes. Oh, and the basic account (which has worked just fine for me so far) is free.

Uploadr for Linux There are a lot of Flickr tools available for Mac and Windows direct from the Flickr site, but none for GNU/Linux. None from Flickr, that is. One tool that I ran across several weeks ago and have used heavily since is the FlickrUploadr tool from Micampe.it It’s very slick and never breaks (so far). When I want to upload an image from my system to my Flickr account, I just drag it onto the FlickrUploadr window, confirm or modify the options in the information dialogue box, and then send ‘em up. Too easy.

When thinking about writing this entry, I wondered how many other Flickr tools are out there for GNU/Linux. I recently had a listener of my GNU/Linux User Show podcast comment in the show forums that he had a right-click Konqueror extension to upload to Flickr. Now that sounds neat. Currently I can only upload from my system so if I see an image I want, I have to download it and then drop it onto Uploadr. It would be cool to bypass that download step, even if just becomes invisible to me.

In my travels I also ran across a page on Tip Monkies that contains a short list of Flickr tools for GNU/Linux. I haven’t tried any of them yet.

Since I am using Flickr regularly once again, I’m interested in other Flickr tools out there that I may have missed. Please leave a comment pointing to whatever Flickr tools you just can’t live without.
