Geeky Fun: Finally! A Blog Client for GNU/Linux That Works!

by Jon on December 21st, 2005

With 4 blogs on the go, I could really make use of a good, multiple-blog capable, blog client. Unfortunately, I’ve had no luck finding a suitable one for my system until now.

I’ve tried LogJam, Drivel, the Gnome Blog tool (whatever that’s called), a KDE Kicker blog applets whose name escapes me, and even Flock. They were all unusable for various reasons. Some of the reasons were technical (they just don’t work), some of the reasons were preference (no Technorati support built in), but for one reason or another none of them were suitable.
Performancing FF Extension
Well, they guys over at Performancing.com have developed a Firefox 1.5 extension blog client. Because it’s a FF goodie, it is effectively cross-platform. I’ve been using it to blog for about 24 hours now and it works wonderfully.

Click on the screen shot to see more, but the (small but important) featurelist includes basic text formatting, lists, alignment and the killer ’source edit’. The source edit is very important to me because blog clients never get things quite right. I want the ability to jump in and tweak the code itself.

Check it out here.

    Hi Jon,

    I found this post from your excellent Flickr photos. What did not work for you about Flock?

    Seasons greetings,
    Lloyd
    PS. I dig the site!

    Hey Lloyd,

    Flock has an issue with my video card. The browser and main blog client work pretty well, but whenever I open a dialogue box (like adding a link or an image to a blog post) the window is missing all it’s controls and border and is mostly invisible (and therefore unusable).

    Here’s a pic.

    This one isn’t that bad - it’s almost usuable, but you get the idea.

    I know it’s my video card because I’ve tried in on about 5 different distros (live CDs and full installs) and it always looks the same.

    I keep trying it though…

    Hi Jon,

    No, actually that is a bug in Flock. Actually, in Firefox as well (Composer rot):
    LinkProperties and SpellCheck dialogs are transparent/black
    http://bugs.flock.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1348

    It is fixed in our developer continuous builds, but they are currently in rough shape as Termie just checked in extensive reword of favorites manager.

    Look for another Flock release mid-January with features including:
    * Import Favorites
    * Flickr uploader
    * Better favorites navigation
    * Faster feed viewing
    * More blogging support

    Really? Wow…that’s good news (for me). I thought I was a ‘one of’ with my video card and therefore not likely to every get fixed.

    Looking forward to the fix. Thanks for the info!

    J
