New Linux User

Firefox Adoption Driven by Windows Users.

by Jon on March 29th, 2006

I was surprised to see an article on Email Battles today that shows the rise on Firefox usage looks like it’s actually being driven by Windows users. I was under the impression that IE still dominated the Windows desktop market by virtue of being pre-installed.

Email Battles stats show that 34% of their visitors use an OS other than Windows, yet 58% of their visitors use Firefox.

My own stats on Tales from the Motherboard show 45% use an OS other than Windows and 38% use Firefox. However, many of my reades are GNU/Linux users so only 31% of my remaining readers use IE.

And New Linux User? 65% use an OS other than Windows and 50% use Firefox. 35% use Windows but only 14% use IE.

I have to admit that I didn’t think very much of Firefox when it came out. I thought it was slow, bloated, and since I have almost never had a virus of piece of malware anyhow, I thought that the security implications were being overblown. However, as a full-time GNU/Linux user I have to admit that it’s the best browser going.

I had always thought that it was the FOSS community that was driving Firefox adoption, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
