Explaining the linux file structure
I remember when I first used linux I was baffled by the amazingly strange file structure. usr, opt, proc, what do they mean?
Although I never looked it up and learnt it as I went along I think many things would have been clearer if I had.
This page gives a good overview of what goes where.
One thing I would add to that is that /opt is often used to house software. Programs will sometimes be stored in /opt/ProgramName/ and are then symlinked to various other folders.
