EcoPup powers open access cybercafe and releases beta version
Ecomoney has been active in the open access community cybercafe project. In this endeavor they are using Puppy Linux and they even have their customized Puppy Linux called Ecopup!
Their team has exerted a lot of effort in this project. They’re driven to give an open access cybercafe to the community and they were able to achieve it! The donated computers weren’t totally new but they were able to make them work nicely with their customized Puppy Linux, Ecopup! ;)
What they aim to achieve with Ecopup:
- To have a large variety of applications that will be required by most non-technical computer users in a low income home environment.
- To be intuitive and familiar to those with existing windows experience.
- To be able to be installed extremely simply on donated hardware, in under ten minutes, perminantly removing all traces of the previous windows operating system. This is make it economically viable to refurbish older p.c.’s and sell them at a price point
- To be natively compatible with as much hardware as possible, *without* additional setup time or training (i.e. autodetect).
In case you want to check it out, that’s cool. The games are fun! And you have what’s basically needed in general. To check out the specs of Ecopup as well as the team’s working notes, follow the discussion here.
I learned about Ecopup through one of the posts on Linux at Home.

Loads very fast, even on old machines, and will give you access to the hard drives (many live CDs won’t) so you can fix or access files if the original operating system won’t.
Quick and easy email and browsing on any PC connected to the Internet. Just use setup to configure the network card and connection. I use it on Verizon DSL without having to load their software.
