Dell announces details for Ubuntu computers

by Kyle on May 19th, 2007

Dell’s recent announcement to sell personal computers loaded with Ubuntu left us wondering what models would be available. Well, Dell finally gave us just the information we were craving this week. The following is a bit of information revealed by Jeremy’s Blog:

We will be launching a Linux based OS (Ubuntu) on the E520, 1505 and XPS 410 starting next Thursday, 5/24. We expect these systems to be less than 1% of our OS mix for the entire year which is ~20,000 systems annually. Please cover the huddle deck below with your team by EOB Sunday. If any questions come up, please let me know so I can address them before launch.

The goal of launching Linux is to continue to give our customers more choices to customize their new Dell. Providing more options to our Linux Enthusiast customer group will hopefully create even more Raving Fans!!

It looks like this coming Thursday will be the big day. It will be interesting to see the consumer reaction as Dell has “given its customers what they want.” Any of you planning on picking up an Ubuntu-based Dell? Please let us know in the comments.

Getting new software is very easy. For my ordinary web work, gimp is great tool. I’ve read some of the community docs. I’ve been watching the short videos on ubuntuvideo. So, I will have 3 types of machines going forward: my mac, my windows box and my new ubuntu machines.

  • Get them while they’re hot!
