Checking out SIM on Nimblex
I already burned a copy of Nimblex and I am trying out SIM for the first time. Hey, it’s an instant messaging app and it’s probably one of the things people wonder about when trying out Linux: Can we still talk to other people? Of course, you can!
Stuff I noticed:
- The user interface is kinda weird compared to GAIM. There’s a buddy list but even on the message dialog box you could see a checklist of who you are talking with.
- There’s a very visible neon green message of the alert from your friend. That’s aside from it being highlighted on your taskbar.
- You could customize the menu on the buddy list. You could set what options will show up. Now that’s neat!
- There are also a number of plugins. When you click the wrench or try to check out what preference settings you could check, you will also see a list of the available plugins and stuff.
- It also acts as an LJ client. Really. But the mood settings does not work properly. Waah!
But in terms of messaging, I find it usable enough. It’s just that I’ve been a GAIM/Pidgin user for quite some time now that this is probably not going to change. Unless I figure out the other settings to make it work for me easily. I’d probably explore this in the coming weeks.
