Be more efficient with Gnome-Do

by Clair on August 15th, 2008

I came across Gnome-Do before but I’ve never personally tried it until today. Out of curiosity, I installed Gnome-Do. (Let’s just say that my significant other was showing off Gnome-Do and I wanted to try it out for myself.) So I installed it via apt.

One thing I like about it is that it’s easy to remember the default keyboard shortcut of Gnome-Do. It’s the Windows key + spacebar. You will get two squares show up on top of the window you’re working with and you could type the app you want to launch or the file you want to open. And if you add some plugins, you could look for albums and artists and easily add them to the play queue. And it’s really quick if you ask me. That means that when I want to listen to something and put it on the queue, I just launch Gnome-Do then look for the artist or album I like a lot. Though I guess it could be confusing as to whether you’d have to click in order to select a certain action. Hrm.

As for the Gnome-Do plugins, you could download a bunch of them from the wiki. I got the Rhythmbox plugin and the Pidgin plugin first because I use those two a lot. I really think that it’s fantastic to have Gnome-Do because it becomes easier to get in touch with other people by searching for their names on Gnome-Do than on the list in Pidgin itself. The list can grow long when all my contacts are online!

If you’re looking for a launcher to use, I think that Gnome-Do does a fine job! But if you think another launcher can do things better, say so and I’d gladly accept the suggestion. :D

Gnome-Do is another classic example of overdoing something to a point where it dosent serve it’s initial purpose any more.
the lack of an appropriate run command (such as in windows) has a real impact on gnome’s usability.

Just so you know, the Gnome-Do version in the repos is way out of date. They have a PPA, or even better build from source. The new versions have integrated plugins,a good preferences dialog, and are better overall. It is really much better.
