New Linux User

The Free World: A New View.

by Jon on November 18th, 2005

I’ve been spending some time kicking around the other b5 Media blogs and have come to a conclusion. This place needs more fun!

Now that I’m a couple of months into New Linux User, I have the luxury of sitting back and taking a look at how things are turning out compared to my mastah plan. I purposely started the site with a very strict policy: I wanted to explain stuff, show people how to do things, and point out some of the cooler propeller head things a new user can do with GNU/Linux. The idea was to make the entry titles match the type of thing people would type into the search engines when looking for specific beginner GNU/Linux information. The stats show that I’ve achieved that goal. With a unique visitor every three minutes, and over 90% of them coming from Google alone - I think the proof is in the pudding.

The problem (if there is one) with this model is that there’s no real reward for people who read the blog on a daily basis either by visiting or via a reader. While I think that most of the information I post here is of use to many people, the odds of today’s article meeting the needs of any one visitor on a given day are slim at best.

The main aim of the site remains true to its roots. I will continue to focus primarily on explanations, howtos and power user stuff, but I’m adding a new category. A category to have some fun with for things that don’t necessarily belong in one of the original three. Ladies and Gentlemen, kids of all ages, I bring you…

…drumroll (where’s Jeremy when you need him?)…

“The Free World!”

Yes, yes, please calm down. Screaming scares the penguins…

As I started out stating, I was inspired by many of the b5 blogs that manage to stay on track, but have the occasional post that is just freakin’ hysterical.

So…yeah. There it is. Closing was never my strong suit.
